Los Angeles ... City of Dreams

Los Angeles, L.A. as it is commonly referred to as, is a city where dreams are born.  Los Angeles is a figment of its own imagination.  In a town where streets are nationally recognized, it’s easy to run into a celebrity or two.  With over 3.8 million people in the City alone, you are sure to spot a friend or two.  Perhaps the founders of Los Angeles envisioned a magnificent city, but they probably didn’t anticipate the present day Los Angeles.

Los Angeles was discovered in the year 1769 by a party of Spanish explorers.  They were in the process of developing a trail between San Diego and San Francisco.  The explorers rested in the area we now know as Los Angeles.  During their brief stay they experienced three earthquakes.  Despite the shaking of the ground, the expedition saw an excellent place for a large settlement.    Missions were established along the trail and in time a pueblo was developed with the permission of King Carlos III of Spain.  The layout of the pueblo, a plaza, fields, pastures, and royal lands was designed before the first settler even arrived.  It took a lot of convincing, but finally a gathering of 11 men, 11 women, and 22 children, soldiers, a mission priest, and a few Indians settled here.

The newly formed pueblo’s growth was slow to begin.  The houses were quaint, made with a flat roof, windows that didn’t have glass, and rawhide doors.  The streets nearly flooded every time it rained.  Even though the United States had recently been born, this didn’t bother the inhabitants of the pueblo for the first Yankee settler didn’t arrive until 1820.  But concerns should have been in the minds of the inhabitants for as history has it, the United States eventually took over or annexed all the land west of the Mississippi River.

Today Los Angeles and surrounding areas attract millions of tourist each year.  The region where Los Angeles is located has become internationally renowned for motion pictures and the entertainment industry.  Sports are a part of this.  You’ll find many professional sport teams including: baseball, football, basketball, and hockey.

Los Angeles’s weather is rather pleasant ... the annual average temperature in Los Angeles is 62.7 degrees Fahrenheit.  The Annual Average rainfall amount is 12.24 inches.  For much of the year you’ll experience warm sunny weather in Los Angeles.

There are several mountain ranges and hills in Los Angeles County.  They include the San Gabriel Mountains, The Santa Monica Mountains, The Dominguez Hills, Hollywood Hills, and more.  To the other extreme, the lowest point in Los Angeles County is in Wilmington which rests at 9 feet  below sea level.  As you can see these are somewhat substantial changes in elevation.

Los Angeles is known for its position along the San Andres Fault.  In 1994, Los Angeles had a 6.8 earthquake hit.  Fortunately most of California’s homes and buildings were built to withstand a major earthquake.  The San Andres Fault is a location where two plates are sliding past one another, thus triggering minor and major earthquakes.  But don’t let that stop you from enjoying all the beauty and pleasures Los Angeles has to offer.

There is a great deal to do in Los Angeles.  Downtown you can visit many  Museums including the LA Children’s Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art.   Other attractions in Downtown LA include Little Tokyo, Chinatown, and Grand  Central Market.  In Hollywood you can visit the Hollywood Wav Museum and the Collectors Book Store.  Also located in this area is Disneyland featuring Adventure land, Fantasy land, and Tomorrow land.  Take a trip to Universal City ... it’s sure to be a worth while adventure.  Beverly Hills, home to the internationally famous Rodeo Drive, is sure to incite your day.  Why not take a day at Six Flags Magic Mountain or take a walk down the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  When the sun goes down, the fun doesn’t stop there.  The nightlife in Los Angeles includes many clubs and bars with live music.

While in Los Angeles make sure to enjoy the afternoon on one of Los Angeles County’s many Pacific beaches.   They include Point Dume, Malibu, Venice, Manhattan, Royal Palms, and more.
