Los Angeles
Los Angeles ... City of
Dreams
Los Angeles, L.A. as it is commonly
referred to as, is a city where dreams are born. Los Angeles is a figment of
its own imagination. In a town where streets are nationally recognized, it’s
easy to run into a celebrity or two. With over 3.8 million people in the City
alone, you are sure to spot a friend or two. Perhaps the founders of Los
Angeles envisioned a magnificent city, but they probably didn’t anticipate the
present day Los Angeles.
Los Angeles was discovered in the
year 1769 by a party of Spanish explorers. They were in the process of
developing a trail between San Diego and San Francisco. The explorers rested in
the area we now know as Los Angeles. During their brief stay they experienced
three earthquakes. Despite the shaking of the ground, the expedition saw an
excellent place for a large settlement. Missions were established along the
trail and in time a pueblo was developed with the permission of King Carlos III
of Spain. The layout of the pueblo, a plaza, fields, pastures, and royal lands
was designed before the first settler even arrived. It took a lot of
convincing, but finally a gathering of 11 men, 11 women, and 22 children,
soldiers, a mission priest, and a few Indians settled here.
The newly formed pueblo’s growth was slow
to begin. The houses were quaint, made with a flat roof, windows that didn’t
have glass, and rawhide doors. The streets nearly flooded every time it
rained. Even though the United States had recently been born, this didn’t
bother the inhabitants of the pueblo for the first Yankee settler didn’t arrive
until 1820. But concerns should have been in the minds of the inhabitants for
as history has it, the United States eventually took over or annexed all the
land west of the Mississippi River.
